The World Jones Made

Recently read The World Jones Made by Philip K. Dick. This novel is set in 2002 on a post-apocalyptic earth that has been nearly destroyed by radiation and is filled with bizarre and disturbing mutants. The populace is ruled by a Federal World Government, aka Fedgov, and has been bullied into adopting Relativism, a philosophy that has led to the legalization of hard drugs and public acts of perversion. The plot revolves around the messianic fervor aroused by the titular character, Jones, and explores the issues of liberty and free will.

  1. At Lauren's suggestion, I started reading this just about the instant she put it down. I liked it a lot - very vivid scenes and characters, with a bizarre view of the future. Jones was a very striking character, gifted - or doomed - with the ability to see exactly one year into the future, he is accordingly ambitious, gloomy, and frustrated at his lack of free will. Other parts of the book seemed a little hasty pudding to me, however. (I decided, against all advice from the dictionary, that "hasty pudding" means thrown together without too much care or calculation!)
