From WH:
Ben Macintyre’s “A Spy Among Friends,” a study of the weird relationships in England – fueled by social class and Oxbridge connections and shocking volumes of alcohol -- that made Kim Philby so successful.
Nonfiction: Helen Macdonald’s “H Is for Hawk” is one that you might like, with lots of sharp and well-crafted description of the natural world.
In fiction, Anthony Doerr’s “All the Light We Cannot See” might well be worth all the hype and attention that it continues to receive.
From CH:Grandma Gatewood’s Walk. Nonfiction about a 67 year old who decided to walk the Appalachian Trail. I loved it.
The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd. Fiction but based on many true stories
The Aviator’s Wife. Nonfiction about Anne Morrow Lindbergh
Dead Wake. Nonfiction by Eric Larsen, sinking of the Lusitania
This is sitting on my bookshelf just waiting for me to pick it up! I shall make it my next priority, immedietly after the trashy thriller novel I am reading about a psycho-maniac trying to restore monarchy to Russia after major plastic surgery to mask his former psycho life. I'll be far more sophisticated in about two days...
ReplyDeleteThat sounds good! What's the title?
ReplyDeleteTHE EXILE. Really, its a rediculous novel, but its wholeheartedly captured my attention. It will make you laugh out loud and then sneak it into the bathroom so no one knows what you are reading...
ReplyDeleteI looked at Amazon to find it and there are about a zillion novels named "The Exile" including Pearl S Buck (I'm sure THAT ain't it!), and one about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and one about an LA cop, and one about students running a newspaper in Russia (close!) - but I didn't find the enthralling book you're reading!
ReplyDeleteOh, its by Allan Folsam, the same guy that wrote The Day After Tomorrow. I will just stick my copy in the mail for you....you can pass it on when you are done with it! It's a perfect no-branier read (I warn you that it may enduce cravings for vodka and blinis).
ReplyDeleteJill - Thanks for sending it to me. It was indeed kind of trashy, but LOTS of fun to read! Vodka and blinis anyone?
